Yesterday I closed my Skype account. In an attempt to reduce the number of 
services I use for communicating. It was getting out of hand. At last count 
there were at least 10 ways in which people can contact me. Madness!

To close your Skype account you actually have to contact "Skype Live Support". 
There is no quick way to close your account. Reading this I got curious and 
decided to go through the process. You can read the transcript below.
